Over the last eight (8) years, now at 29 years old and still around 5’2ish, I have lost and maintained a 123lb weight loss without gastric bypass surgery, any commercial diet programs or fad diets.
In a world where media and societal mores hold beauty and fitness to high standards, an overweight person can feel depressed, left out, and suffer low self-worth. Television and fashion magazines bombard us with pictures of reed-thin models and actresses and athletes with washboard abs, glamorizing certain impossible ideals to a point that a normal person is destined to feel inadequate. One can imagine how an overweight or morbidly obese person must feel to be exposed to this environment.

There is such a media buzz being created around the swine flu and SARS in America that is creating fear. Imagine this front-page news story: "SARS epidemic infects 60 million Americans with economic losses exceeding $1 trillion. In response, the government announces a massive public health campaign, industry pledges full cooperation regardless of cost, and school districts agree to take all necessary measures" (The Boston Globe, May 29, 2003). Fortunately, SARS has not reached these proportions... but obesity has. Obesity in adults and children has reached epidemic proportions and people are dying from it everyday. The prevalence of obesity is a national epidemic and fast becoming America's most significant public health issue and yet we don't see the government coming up with vaccines or a plan to put a stop to it. I wonder why?
